Having watched and enjoyed
‘Goodness gracious me’ on television I decided to go and see the
Funjabis. Britain’s
only live Asian comedy group, Mamta Anand, Shelley Chopra, Soddy
Singh Kahlon and Tony Singh with token white performer David
Capstick.
Their introduction to
Edinburgh is a show called ‘Lovin’ a Sorna Gora (loving a nice
white boy). The night I
was in to see the show the small audience of about 20 were not
giving the performers much feedback and this seemed to dampen their
spirits. I am sure that
if the audience reaction is greater the performance is also lifted.
This is not to say it was a poor performance just that it
could have been more vibrant.
Camal the fifth daughter of
Mucky Sing wants a traditional arranged marriage, but this would
cost Mucky a fortune. He
sets about finding her the cheapest option, almost begging her to
get a boyfriend, get pregnant then get married.
Camal meets a white boy and falls in love, initially incensed
about this, Mucky finds out the white boy is very rich and suddenly
changes his mind. The
plot takes many twists and turns until the happy ending.
It was an interesting sample
of another genre of performance.
